Smog info on 66 Mustang 200 Engine
Daughter is selling her 66 Mustang with the straight 6/200 engine.
Does the smog equipt. (air injetors & air pump) have to be on and working if she sells it? Her brain surgeon (not!) ex-boyfriend removed all the smog stuff and plugged the air injector holes in the block.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Gordon

You will need to contact your state motor vehicle department or emissions station. Here in Colorado the stations give the vehicles a physical check for smog equipment based on what the computer tells that is acceptable. In order to sell the vehicle here it is the resposibilty of the owner to get the vehicle emisiions tested before it is sold to another party. California is a whole other ball of worms. I'm sure you will get some other suggestions.

It depends. I was able to buy my 79 T/A and there was no problem when it was missing a few things (which I subsequently found and put back).
On something that old, unless the inspection machine or inspector know what came on there, it's up to the inspector's knowledge. Naturally, if he/she sees pipe plugs and hoses capped, thats going to be a warning sign to them it was tampered.
Here in NYS, the car must have the equipment, even on safety inspections. It has to be there and "functional" if originally equipped. In 1966, it's doubtful there were emission diagrams for the vehicle, which would point out what should have been there.
If I were the potential buyer, I would knock you down several hundred dollars for the missing equipment for a couple of reasons:
1) It might mask a bigger problem (ie. why it was removed).
2) You've destroyed the originality of this car as a collectable by removing it, now I have to source it all!
3) You've made it tough for me to inspect it!
Funny that I never messed up any girlfriend's cars . I get along with the parents. LOL

RE: Smog on 66 Mustang
JEDI9 et al,
Yes it is a California car and yes I have to install the smog equipment that the car had from the factory.
(I think I'll put a hurt on that brain surgeon kid)
Lucky for me he kept all the stuff that he took off.
I'll let everyone know how it turns out.
Thanks for the replies,
Regards,
Gordon

don't bother GORDON! I live in Cali. All vehicles hear 1973 and older no longer require smog checks. I have sold a few of them, and bought them. No smog required. You will be wasting your time by putting the smog equipment back on.
On a side note, the first time I popped the hood of a 66 stang and saw a smog pump, I practically fainted. I couldn't believe they used one on that car. I have a 72 ford maverick with a 302, and it has no smog whatsoever from the factory--just a couple of vaccuum lines.
Seriously though, don't put that stuff back on.

Wrong! Put the smog equipment back on. The vehicle will run better with the pollution control installed. It is also your duty as a motorist to put the car back to original equipment with the smog equipment put on.
The vehicle is more efficient WITH the smog equipment as designed.
Jeremy: You could be dead wrong if California has visual inspections. Just because they don't check actual smog, they could in theory pull you over any time and have a look under the hood to check for missing equipment. Pull you over for a light out, next thing you know, unsafe car, missing this, missing that.
In NYS, I could easily fail a car that way. If the vehicle originally had it, it has to be on and working...even though there is no smog check for vehicles 25 years and older.
Put the parts back on, return it to stock and be done with it. A car with plugs where the smog equipment used to be is "ghetto" and shows the owner knows nothing about how a vehicle operates or performs. It also destroys the originality of the vehicle...it will net you less money in the long haul.

Hmmm, you could be correct joe-I will discuss this with my father who is a smog check.
While everyone should be "politically and environmentally" correct, and should therefore obey your duty to keep your car running as clean as possible with all the original smog equipment, the reality of the situation is that the benefit of having a "smog exempt" vehicle really means just that. Do whatever you want to it.
There are no visual inspections down here as well...unless the vehicle has been out of the dmv system with takes about 7 years.
I know we differ on this opinion-but a 66 mustang with a 6 cylinder is just that, a very collectible car, but not one of 300 or so, in other words not very rare. I would rip of the smog as well. (actually I would upgrade with a late model roller 5.0 motor)
There are so few old cars on the road anymore, that they are simply not really a big pollutant problem any longer. Our problem lies with the bush administration and his reversal of practically all environmental laws. He is destroying our earth.
Our problem lies in the major oil companies and factories who are allowed to buy and Crush old vehicles in exchange for "pollution" credits so that they do not have to clean up their own mess.
Our problem is not with a 66 6 cylinder mustang without a smog pump.
Anyway, just ranting. Joe is likely correct in the sense of technicalites, and what should be done if you are emissions minded on this particular car. I have never heard of one cop in Cal pulling anyone over for smog violations on an older smog exempt pre 73 car. They have been concentrating on cracking the polluters with the non-smog exempt car. I adhere to the strict california smog regulations when modifying my 86 mustang
anyway guys, take care and have a GREAT thanksgiving!!!!!

rule of thumb dumb
Back in the early days of smog controls , it was a joke , rember well having to remove carbs to clean out smog passage ways , they would clog up and the smog pipes would rust out , these things were a nite mare , this is why you see them plugs in them holes , they should get a free pass on smog check if it was up to me

You must do your part as all of us that drive a car contribute to the problem . Not saying to walk everywhere, but you must do your part.
A Mustang of this vintage is a collectable, 6 cylinder or not. If I saw missing parts under the hood, I would surely cut you down to half your asking price. Who knows what else was "bypassed"? Removing smog equipment is simple ignorance, nothing more. It will IMPROVE the way the car runs.
An engine is an air pump in theory. Adding more air to it by reducing the combustion chamber temps (one thing an AIR pump can do) will only make it run better . So, why remove it?
Not only that, but you have a nice old original car with the RIGHT parts in it.
Jeremy: NO!!! That is not what a "smog exempt" vehicle means in theory. It means it simply doesn't get a smog check! It doesn't mean "rip it all off". Anyone that does is simply ignorant. If you are pulled over, in theory, any cop could say, "Hey son, sounds kinda loud under there. Pop the hood". If you get a stickler, you could get a violation for just about anything. Now you've opened for more "coupons" (tickets).

joe cool
I'm not saying you are'nt right , but i don't know how far back you go , but in the early days of these smog devices , they were a joke , they did'nt know what they were doing , they were just coming up with idea's to cut down on the smog , all i'm saying is they were a joke and they were junk , today they are doing good with there new smog controls , but they are getting lax on that more and more , they have stalled on any new idea's for the future , the auto industry is just selling cars and trucks , and putting more junk on them to advoid dealing with the real problems of the amount of smog we do polute the earth with , so yea you are right , and yes back in 66 they were a joke

The number one thing you don't want to do is put any kind of V8 in a MUstang that came out with a six. None of the other components are adequate (tranny, rear end, suspension, brakes, wheels, etc.) Much better to spent the money on a 66 with a 289. Worth lots more now, and lots more later--plus much more fun to drive. MHO.

Smog devices date back to the 60's with the PCV valve replacing the road draft tube. As time went on they got sophisticated as they are today.
Newsflash: Vehicles still use PCV valves today.
Again, understanding the emission controls is half the battle. People that remove them are ignorant--nothing more, since they do not understand how they work and actually BENEFIT the vehicle making it better.
The person that took this smog pump off the Mustang has no clue and obviously doesn't belong under the hood of anything. Removing it thinking it will make the car better is half the ignorance.

Good topic actually but I'm with Joe on this one. You still have Federal regs to contend with and even if you do sell the vehicle to someone else it might not be acceptable in another state and you might be liable for selling the car tampered..its any ones guess. What I can't figure out is why everyone wants to tear off their smog stuff? I have a 72 pontiac that has never failed smog checks and a 77 Dodge that has never failed smog checks! I am the original owner of both. People will pull this stuff off and forever live with problems instead of just buying a Factory Manual and learning how it works and service it correctly! If they dont understand how it works in the first place how can they possibly know it will work better after it is removed? Duh!
Anyway GBB3156, this is not directed at you its a statement in general. There are so many people out ther messing with stuff that they have no business looking at. Most cant breath without someone telling them to inhale and exhale! I'm, still waiting for the post where someone is going to install 600ci diesel in there 61 VW and they ask how to wire it?!?!?

CHUCKMAC. Actually a 66 mustang with a 6 cylinder could be the ideal platform for a street/strip car. Many people who are serious about racing/and/or fixing their car up for serious performance will go with an aftermarket rear, aftermarket trans, after market suspension etc. So gutting the car because it has a 6 cylinder will provide the perfect chance to build it from the ground up. However, too many people people thing it is an easy swap, and wind up ruining and junking a perfectly good car because they couldn't follow the project through.
If I had this 66 mustang, considering its age and collectible status, and if I was to keep the 6 cylinder, then yes, for originality purposes (and smog) it would be pretty stupid just to yank the pump. It will make no difference in power, and you have just killed an otherwise original car.
GBB3156, if the mustang is pretty original besides the smog pump, then I would suggest putting it back together, and sell it as a clean original. I think however, that you should buy it and turn it into a nice little street machine. ( i miss my 67 stang!)
