nissan speedometer

i have a '94 nissan truck, the speedometer only works on occasion. if it does work, its usually cold out and only last for a couple of miles. when its not working its not on zero, but gradually going up, even when the truck is idling. i think it might be a vehicle speed sensor, but the dealer said it had a mechanical speedometer. it doesnt have a speedo cable like my old ford does, so i think the dealer is wrong. if anyone can help me i'd really appreciate it.
thanks in advance, sean

It would be a grand start to know which model truck we are talking about as well as the engine size.

Nissans have electronmechanical speedos that give up hope fast on many models. My coworker had to replace the one on his 1990 Stanza to the tune of a couple hundred dollars.

Hit the dealer's parts counter and have the parts guy look it up and advise.
