1986 Toyota Van

Aloha,

I have a friend who has a problem with his 1986 Toyota Van, Auto trans w/overdrive . 4 cyl with 136.5 cu in engine (sorry, i know i'm gonna mess that one up).........

When the brake pedal is pushed in, it travels about halfway to the floor, then the brakes engage. An aside to this is that his brake service indicator is squeeking, so we are going to do a brake job. However, I'm wondering if this other problem has something to do with his master cylinder, air in the lines, or power brake booster (not sure if equipped). Any help on this one please?

If the brake warning light is on, either:

1) You left the parking brake on ,
or
2) You have a hydraulic leak.

The latter is very dangerous and must be fixed at once.

Likely causes are a bad master cylinder, out of spec brakes (will push the pistons in the wheel cylinders out too far), or leaky wheel cylinders.

I believe this van has a 2.4L engine---no matter, these were TERRIBLE vans. Very hard to work on and bun warmers (you're sitting on the engine ).
