I recently replalced the battery in my Golf, which is equipped with a factory alarm as well as a stereo anti-theth alarm. Now it starts fine, but it will not idle. Every time I remove my foot from the gas pedal the darn thing cuts off; Also, I used to be ablel to just reach in and start it, now I have to depress the gas pedal before it will start. Is this something I can fix?

Your engine will run bad for awhile while the computer reprograms itself according to your driving style and the driving enviroment. This happens after the battery is disconnected for a while.Wait a day or so and see what happens. What happens is when the computer is disconnected from the battery ,it looses all memory of your engine that it had analysed and set parameters for so it has to do it all over again.
