1978 Bronco vent problem

My son's friend has a 78 Bronco and when he turns on the air conditioner or heater, he gets some nasty fumes coming out the vents. It's basically the fumes from leaking oil getting burned.
I figure the fan intake must have a leak on the input side.
Anyone had this problem before or ideas about it?

Fix the truck's oil burning problem first before worrying about that! (That is if you don't die from the fumes, cough, cough!)

Sounds like it's a tired old truck.....

Possible leaks occur around the heater box, fan, and duct work....not worth fixing if it's burning oil and in poor condition. Fix that first.

Yeah, he could use new seals on about everything, but being 19, he just adds a quart every couple of weeks. Most of it is burned externally by the exhaust.
The vent problem makes it impossible to use his defroster or heater, though, and with winter here it'would be nice to roll up the windows without the smell or fear of CO.

All the more reason to fix it, because CO is odorless and can kill you. No sense in spending a dime on something like that until the engine problem is licked. A quart a week makes the dang thing practically two cycle. LOL.

If the oil is burning out of the exhaust, you likely won't smell it in the truck. It is probably leaking it at the valve covers, intake and everywhere else.

In turn, this is coming through the vent system. Possible cracks around the cowling, rust holes, bad vent door system/cable, etc.

Again, good money after bad if you have that kind of engine trouble . These vehicles are a dime a dozen, or the rebuilding of this one could be a good father/son project.
