"check gauges" light on
1992 pontiac grand prix with 153,000
miles the check gauge light is on all gauges are in good working condition...
what causes this problem??

Might have a bad oil pressure switch or low fluid sensor that is usually hooked up in that same circuit.

Check autolibrary (through my "The Basics") post.
Most times, the sensor is in the oil pan and the sender in the oil filter housing or engine block.
