backup lights - intermittent

Question about my 83 delta 88 royale, v8.

When I put the shifter into Reverse, the backup lights come on, but if I take my hand off the shifter they go out. If I push up on the shifter a little bit, they come back on. Do I need to replace the backup lights switch, or is there an adjustment I can make on the shifter???

Thanks,
joatmon

Sounds like a linkage adjustment. If you hold your hand on the shifter and they stay on all the time, it's probably out of adjustment.

Failing that, bad back up light/neutral safety switch.

Thanks Joe!
yes the lights stay on when I have my hand on the shifter. If the linkage is out of adjustment, how do I make the adjustments?? Can you walk me through it?

Check autolibrary through my "the Basics" post below.

You can also try a newer year rear drive (such as a 1990 Custom Cruiser) if 1983 is too old for autolibrary.

Same thing. 80-90 Custom Cruiser (full size wagon), 80-84 Olds 98 and 80-85 Delta 88, all the same "basic" platform.
