Smile stalling

89"mecury,topaz,2.3,inline-4,4-door.
Vehicle starts and runs,but dies when the gear selector is moved into gear.Asif the ignition circut had been severed.

Does it happen intermittently? Or all of the time. If it is all of the time, there is a possibility the torque converter clutch is not releasing. But Let's not jump the gun here. Is the Check Engine Light on? Does it run good? Is it Fuel injected or carburetted?

joe could it be the idle conrol motor?thats what it sounds like to me ..maybe im wrong....What you think?

The only way it could be lock up solenode is if it is a over drive trans in it. Never seen one with overdrive trans it.

The locking converter clutch has nothing to do with overdrive other than the fact that if you have a trans with overdrive, you can acheive lock up in overdrive also. The converter clutch will lock in direct drive also. (3rd gear) Never the less it probably isn't the problem with this car since it's not a very common problem with them.

Ford didn't use lock converter on that year car or at all, except overdrive trans.
