89 maxima transmission

89 maxima transmission
I have an 89 maxima that sometimes sticks in park. This normally happens when the engine is cold. Nothing I do will cause the shifter to move in gear. Normally the problem solves itself in 12-24 hours. Anyone know what might cause this ????

Try this when it happens:
Turn the key forward till the warning lamps come on. Can you shift it now? If you can, it's likely something with the shift/park release solenoid (safety feature).
At this same time, have a helper go to the rear of the car and see if you have brake lights at this time or not. You may also have a bad brake light switch.
If it sticks all the time, no matter what, engine off, on, etc. it could be a cable issue.
I'm for the former problem though. See what you find.
