Ranger tailgate linkage

On a 86 Ranger pickup, the linkage (inside the tailgate) broke to the tailgate latch. It broke right where it attached (somehow) to the latch handle. Does anyone have a clue if, and how, it can be repaired? Or is it one of those items where you have to replace the entire tailgate?
What do you think?

Hit your Ford dealer's parts counter and they will have photos and part #s for all the serviceable parts.

Then you'll know what you're up against.

That happens on a lot of fords, inside the tailgate there should be some bolts opposite the latch, if you pull it apart it may have just come loose, but the parts are relatively inexpensive to buy.

rbrat: were you successful? I'm having trouble removing my old cables (they both snapped). Something happened on the inside that I can't access, or they are captive screws that just don't come out.
Thanks for any tips.
