Standard Transmission

I have a 1989 Ford F-250 with a 5 spd transmission. I would like to know what type of fluid I should use in the tranny. Somebody told me to use ford automatic tranny fluid. Is this true, I thought
that automatic transmission fluid would be to thin. Can somebody please help me. Can I use a hypoid oil like they used in older transmissions.

Your truck should have a ZF transmission. These transmissions were designed to use ATF as a lubricant. 80W90 gear oil is not acceptable. It will cause hard shifting, especially when cold.

Alldata shows your trans. has a capacity of 6.8 pts Mercon ATF.
