broken speedometer cable or transmission

I have an 81 honda civic and the speedometer cable broke, is this the reason I can't shift into 5th gear. Also it makes a loud, tangley noise in 1st and worse in 2nd, better in 3rd and almost non-exsisyant in 4th, but no 5th, what's up??

You may have more than one problem at work here.

Did the two problems crop up at the same time?

Couple of possibilities, but the one I think is most plausible is that you've had a failure in the tranny which has destroyed the speedo drive gear. Other possibility is that the speedo drive gear went south and sent some pieces into the tranny with same results. Suggest you disconnect speedo cable at tranny and determine the cable is actually bad. Next step remove the speedo drive mechanism from the tranny (not sure how that's configured on your car, but should be the speedo cable and and 2-4 screws I would think).

It is likely you need a clutch or have internal failure in the tranny and that is the shifting problem.
