Nissan Altima distributor

My daughter's 1994 Nissan Altima stopped running and would not start again. Had spark from the plug wires but it acted as if the timing might have been a little off. Finally took it to a garage and got a bill for over $400 because they replaced the distributor. Just what kind of distributor does this vehicle have and could it have been repaired or is it not repairable.

Most distributors are actually rebuilt units and for applications like this, it can be quite costly. It's what you get when you buy foreign cars---comes with the territory.

The unit is probably about 175, say another 100 bucks for labor, and maybe 100 bucks diagnostic time, sounds a little high but about right.
