99 Toyota no start

99 Toyota Avalon XLS with 28K miles did not start two nights ago. Turned over great but no combustion. Next morning it started after 1-2 second hesitation. Now seems to be fine. Only other clue is that over last 6 months I have noticed a very slight hesitation in starting and a slight shudder or roughness when engine is turning off. (This hesitation/rough shut-down is so slight my wife thinks it exists only in my mind.) I generally keep my tank above half-full but not always.

Should I:

A. Do nothing and wait for another episode.
B. Add some dry gas in case I have a moisture problem.
C. Install a new fuel filter.

we can't really throw parts at it untill we know exactly why it wouldn't start

was there spark, fuel, air?

without knowing this we (most mechanics) shouldn't be tossing out suggestions. Throwing parts at it usually doesn't fix the problem but masks it.

Thanks for responding. I turned the engine over for less than a minute to avoid running down the battery. I didn't have time to do any diagnostics that night then the car started the next morning. Is there a way to check the comouter for error codes now that I have run the vehicle?

not sure how to check codes on a toyota. Autozone will scan it for you.

Not sure that trouble codes have anything to do with this problem or not.

Must start with "The Basics" and tell us if you lack air, fuel, or spark or any combination thereof. Then we'll know what we are dealing with.
