1983 Mazda -cannot get engine to run?

My son bought an 83' Mazda RX-7 ~9months ago. It has an 85 Mazda RX-7 rotary engine in it. Between myself, my son and a friend that is pretty good with car repair we thought we have everything hooked up and ready to go, but we still cannot get the engine to run. We have a new battery, wires, a good distributor that is getting voltage, a good starter, ect.. Engine turns over but will not run. We are wondering if it has to do with compression, or some particular quirk that exists with rotary engines. Any ideas or possible advice would be appreciated.

Start with my "The Basics" post below and tell us what you find.

Watch out---this one sounds cobbled together of various parts and could be a vast money pit with no end. Most of these cars are VERY expensive to maintain.
