From Chilton's:

On throttle body vehicles, there are two kinds of in-line filters available. From 1982-85 the filter is located in the engine compartment. From 1986 the filter is located to the left of the fuel tank. On the MFI engines, the filter is located on the left side of the fuel tank also.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Relieve the fuel system pressure.
For engines other than early TBI with an engine compartment mounted filter, raise and safely support the vehicle.
Remove the filter bracket attaching screw(s) and filter bracket.
Grasp the filter and 1 fuel line fitting. Twist the quick-connect fitting 1/4 turn in each direction to loosen any dirt within the fitting. Repeat for the other fuel line fitting.
Use compressed air, blow out dirt from the quick-connect fittings at both ends of the fuel filter.

Always wear safety goggles when using compressed air.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To disconnect the fuel line fittings, squeeze the plastic tabs on the male end of the connector and pull the fitting apart. Repeat for the other fitting.
Remove the fuel filter.

To install:

Remove the protective caps from the new filter.
Connect the filter retainers on the filter inlet and outlet pipes.
Install the filter and quick-connect fittings.
On rear mounted filters, align the filter bracket on the frame, then attach with mounting screw(s).
Lower the vehicle, if raised. Tighten the fuel filler cap.
Connect the negative battery cable.
Turn the ignition ON and inspect for leaks.
Reset the clock, radio and any other accessories if required.
