Smile 91 Tercel Engine Light On

91 Toyota Tercel, 2 Doors, auto, 125,000KM.

Just changed Exhaust Front Pipe, Muffler etc last weekend, $268. Last night, we I drove on highway, Engine Light On and stays there. I tried to add some engine oil, but no help. I also smell some odor coming from the muffler.

Can someone give me some quick check-ups before I see a mechanic? I smelled the odor just after they replaced the muffler. Is it possible they messed up something?

Thanks in advance

smelly muffler

I would not worry about the muffler they all smell when new.Once they burn off all the oil and other stuff it will be ok.I am not sure about your code.

Oil will burn off the pipe. Cutting oil is used to bend and make the pipe. Will smell for a few weeks. Normal.

Is the engine oil lamp on or the Check Engine lamp?

If the former, change the oil and filter and refill to the proper level. If that doesn't work, rent a oil pressure gauge from Autozone.

If the pressure checks out, you have a failed sending unit. If the oil pressure is low, internal engine issues. Might not be worth fixing depending on vehicle condition.

Thanks for your valuable thoughts.

It's Check Engine Light on. I just changed oil recently. I planned to sell it for around $1000 bucks. I have no plan to spend over too much on it.

By the way, how can I check the code?

you need a scan tool

You will need a scan tool you can borrow one from Auto Zone. Now that I think about it since you got a new exaust the wire for the O2 sensor might be off because that is were it is.It should be in the pipe hooked up to the exaust manifold.

Autozone will scan the codes at no charge to you, but I agree with Mike because you had recent exhaust work there.

A grand for this car in that condition is generous . Those are 500 dollar cars in these parts .
