Mercury Tracer Ignition Switch

On a 1989 mercury Tracer 1.6L, Where could I find a wiring diagram for the ignition switch?

My daughter owns such car and the switch locked. A replacement was 174.99 for the entire assembly and just a cylinder is not available so a friend pryed out the cylinder and she has been starting it with a screw-driver. Now that part is stripped and it just turns but won't start.

Both Haynes and Chilton do not make a book for this car. Any ideas on where to find a manual or diagrams so I can know what I'm dealing with?

Thanks a bunch,

BTBISHOP

Autolibrary.org below, failing that an Alldata.com subscription for 25 dollars yearly, failing that, a Ford service manual.

The lock cylinder and electrical portion of the ignition switch may be one part. If so, buy one aftermarket (don't have to go to the dealer) and replace it as an assembly and be done with it.

Eeeeek! That switch looks like a mechanical nightmare and is mucho expensive! You might try searching www.autowhiz.com for a better price. Follow this link for some help on the install.

You also might find some used service manuals at www.bookfinder.com or try your local library for a manual.

You might also call around to some parts stores locally and see what types of prices you get.

I've looked at the wiring diagrams and the diagrams showing the actual switch assembly.

They don't match. The photos of that assembly show a wiring harness being unplugged from the bottom of the assembly. On this car, the wires are soldered to the left side of the switch?!?!?

the link also showed how to just replace the lock cylinder but we have never been able to find one for her car. Do you think a lock cylinder for a Ford Escort would fit it?

Thanks,

A better diagram is probably found in Alldata.com...costs 25 bucks annually.

An Escort one might fit, but only a parts catalog can tell you that.

Sorry about the Chilton's diagram. I havnt seen a lock cylinder available by itself in my travels on the web parts sites...it always refers back to the switch assembly. Have you tried your local library for a service manual? does the switch look like this?

Original poster:

Have you shopped around at various parts stores for a replacement?

This winner is a Mazda 323 in disguise and hence that is why the parts tend to be on the expensive side over something else. It is not the same as an Escort of this vintage.

If anything, a Mazda switch might be the same. I suppose this is their way at letting you know you own a Mazda in disguise.
