Thumbs down 1990 F-150 with engine trouble. Heads or valves?

I have a 1990 F-150 that is needed some surgery. After going up a tall hill in 5th gear the engine started clicking badly and lost power. It sounds like a valve sticking and ticking increases with rpm. Also sounds like I am running on 4 cylinders instead of 6. Gotta to know what to check first!! IT is running rougher than it should and I am concerned it may be head gasket. My radiator fluid is not visible, but it never ran hot on the gauge or visibly. This is a new one for me, so if you know how to get a farm fella up and running, please let me know. THanks a bunch!
