Exclamation 1998 maxima

I have a trouble code showing that the EVAP canister vent control valve is open and therefore has a small leak that won't let me pass emissions. Do I need to replace the charcoal canister, or is there a wa y to fix that valve without buying a new part. Please explain in detail because I am a beginner under the hood.
Thanx!!

Could be the charcoal cansister, purge valve, or simply a bad gas cap.

I understand this, but in the event that the vent control valve is open and that is the problem, then what action must i take in order to rectify the situation?

Replace the offending part. If it's part of the charcoal cansister, then replace that.
