quick question

I have a 2000 grand am se-talked to a Pontiac Service Advisor at the dealer yesterday and he said quote"whether the check engine light is on or not, he can hook up to the car and get the vehicles history on when the light came on and why it came on." Now correct me if I am wrong, cars computers can now log history as a type of data logger? I thought you only get the light and the light stays on until the problem is fixed or goes away temporarily? Yes/no Help please.

Yup, OBDII vehicles can record history and hard codes.
