Could be a number of things. What does your service manual have to say on this issue?

Result for code: P0171

Manufacturer Description
SAE Standard=System Too Lean (Bank No. 1)
Probable Cause=Intake/Exhaust/Fuel System, Wiring, Injector, Mass Air Flow sensor, Engine Control Module

I would do the basics first, tune up and all filters, check fuel pressure. Reset codes and see what happens.

I bought a haynes repair manual when I purchased the car-I take it I need the manufacturer supplied service manual to diagnose this problem?

You sure should if you want to diagnose and fix it correctly. The Haynes manual is a table prop for any serious repair. The GM OEM manual is far superior.
