distributor gear broken (86 caddilac eldorado)

I took out the distrubutor gear to my 86 cadillac eldorado and 2 or 3 teeth were stripped. the cam gear appears to be minimally damaged. I think the problem is a broken oil pump. I tried to turn the hex bolt with a nut driver and it wouldnt turn. Is this very common for a oil pump to lock up and tear up a distributor gear? or are there possibly more problems that i dont want to get into?
thanks for the help

No it's not common at all. Any parts store should have a replacement gear for the distributor or can order one.

thanks. i have already purchased a new gear thinking that this was the problem. But i am begining to think that the oil pump is not functioning right. This weekend i am going to take off the oil pan and have a look. Ill post what i find then. Are there any other causes for a distributor gear to break? (its well beyond normal wear and tear)

No, not really. Unless the distributor was put back wrong or forced in.

Have a look at autolibrary.org below.
