car problems

I have a 1995 Ford Taurus with 95,000 miles. Last night, the control panel lights, headlights...everything... were getting dimmer and dimmer until every component of the car turned off, of course, so as the engine. I thought it was the battery but it isn't. This morning, I turned on the car, and it started running for 3 minutes until it stopped. I have checked all the belts, and they are in perfect condition. I think the problem is the alternator, but I am not sure how to test it.

Also, since 1997 the Ford dealer had to replace the spedometer five times ( yeah...5 times) because it would jump from a reading of 50 mph to 80 or 90 mph. Furthermore, the same problem is happening this year.

Any suggestions,

thanks

Sounds like a wasted alternator. Check autolibrary.org for how to replace it yourself, and my "The Basics" for how to test the alternator.

Use a Ford reman alternator for best results.
