no heat 1988 nissan sentra

Hi! I have a 1988 nissan sentra that I am trying to keep on the road. This winter the heat stopped working only blowing cold air. The car would run with the needle cold for about 45 minutes, and then within one minute the needle would shoot up to hot.

I flushed the radiator with recommended flush and replaced with water for now, not wanting to waste the anti-freeze until I solved the problem. This didn't help. I thought of replacing the thermostat, but I can't find it - I checked the top and bottom hose. Also, I don't see the fan turning - the belts are fine. Could it be the heat sensor. I think I see what looks like a sensor at the bottom of the radiator next to the drain ****.

Any advise?

Thanks...

Start out by changing the thermostat and any gaskets associated with it.
