Red face Transmission

I have a 88 Nesson Maxima with a auto. trans.
The prob. is that when I shift from reverse or from park it will not go in to drive. The only way it will go is is if I shift to 2 range first then up to drive. After it is in drive the trans. works fine.
Also while parked doing the shifting it seems to shift hard with a slight clunk.

Thanks for any help.

Mileage? Last time the tranny fluid was changed? Sounds like internal failure.

Borrowed time, likely internal failure. If the fluid is burned or dark, curtains .

Rebuild time in all likelihood.

Hey Joe...does it kinda sound like AZbowhunter may have a problem in the adjustment of his shift linkage. Usually I have found that when you have to shift to 2nd gear, then up to drive to get it in drive, its because the linkage has worn and/or come out of adjustment. I bet is goes into park just before the indicator shows that its supposed to as well.

Could be Cheese---but zero detail is really given here and with that mileage, one can usually assume......................

LOL.

Lightbulb Had heard

Cheese might be right! I have heard from my Son-in-law that a friend of his had the same prob. with the same type of auto. What this person did was have the linkage addjusted. That solved the problem.
I should look into this and hope that is all. It would be hard on my budget if I had to rebuild or get a new tranny.
