speedometer

90 olds cutlass. Has a electronic speedometer. It doesn't light up at night. It doesn't work anytime. No odometer either. Occasionally the speedometer will light for a few seconds at night and the speedometer still isn't working. The fuel gauge is in the speedometer . It doesn't work either. What to look for. Is there a sensor somewhere that might cause this? Maybe the speedometer assembly need replacement.?? Maybe it's in the computer./? The console computer doesn't show mpg or distance traveled or fuel. It does tell how far til fuel is empty. Shows water temp. and when the oil will need changing. What to Do?

Two things I would try for starters:

Check to make sure you don't have a fuse burnt out.

Run by your local Auto Zone and have them scan for codes (it's free):

2108 Hwy 25b North
Heber Springs, AR 72543
(501) 206-0723

You could also simply have a connector loose in the dash somewhere, but troubleshooting for that may entail removing the instrument cluster or laying on your back on the floorboard and looking upbehind there to check connectors.

if it is a digital dash you will likely have to have the dash removed and sent in to be rebuilt or fixed, once this is working, everything lighting up. you will then be more able to determine if there is any other problems with the speedometer such as a sensor or computer problem, you can check with your local parts stores if they have the ability to send it in to be repaired or try your local dealer, this is something you may want to check prices on they usually have one set price on repairing the dash.

yes they did have and most of them dont work anymore though, there is alot of olds cutlass supremes out there that you cant read the odometer on, digital may not be the correct word for it but it is similiar cause it gives readout in numered form.
here is a link to a place that repairs dashes that doesnt appear to be that expensive though i have never used them though.

BeJay hit the nail on the head the first time---a parts store can have it sent out to their electronics supplier for repair. You could have it back in a week or two.

TowGuy: GM digital dash has been around since the 70's and 80's .

Didn't pay much attention to GM dashes back then. I'm a Toyota guy, remember?
