ABS system

I own an AWD 2002 Ford Explorer XLT. I live in Maryland where we were just hit with a pretty bad snowstorm (for our area). Anyway, I was driving last night and hit a patch of ice. I hit the brakes, but the vehicle didn't stop. I didn't realize at the time that I was on ice and the ABS had been activated. This morning when I started it up, the ABS light came on and stayed on. I'm trying to decide whether to spend the $137 the local dealer is asking to look at it. A mechanic friend suggested that I could unplug my battery and force the vehicle to do a system check again. He said that if the light is still on after this, then I could take it to the dealer. What do you think?
