Arrow 1989 Buick Lesabre Transmission Problems

I have a 1989 Buick Lesabre Custom with the 3.8 L V-6 which has about 170K on it. The tranny is a 4-speed overdrive model. All fluid levels have been checked correctly and kept up with. The engine and the rest of the car are excellent. However the transmission has an erratic shifting problem. When the car is started and has run for 5 minutes the transmission will go into reverse and drive (first gear) fine. But for the first 2 minutes of forward motion the car will not get out of first. After that 2 minutes the car will begin shifting into second, but only after reving the engine to higher than normal RPM's to get it there. The car doesn't shift out of second. Are there a few things I can do on my own like cleaning/changing sensors or vaccum lines before spending $900-$1100 for a rebuild

Some of these THM440T4's use vacuum modulators---a small vacuum chamber which is about 20 bucks and easy to change.

Try that first. Any parts store should have it.
