How does 4 wheel drive work?

My Honda CRV has an "auto 4 wheel drive" on it. Does anyone know how it works?
My guessing is the car has to pick up free rotation from one of the wheels to "triger" the 4 wheel drive. Is this correct?
Thanks for answers.

Generally, the system senses slip on one of the wheels and turns on the solenoids or whatever controls the system, yes.

On "manual" 4WD systems, you either have to get out and lock the hubs, or push a dash button or shift a lever for it to actuate 4WD.
