Snow-Tire Type Hum in Engine

Snow-Tire Type Hum in Engine
* 1997 Pontiac Sunfire, 2.2L
engine, automatic:
For any old-timers here that remember what the old snow tires sounded like, I have a snow-tire type of hum that is noticeable from 50mph to 60, though not as loud as the old snow tires were. As the speed increase, the hum increases in pitch.
1. Drive to 58mph listening to hum which starts around 50.
2. Tap the brake and hum disappears.
3. Tap the accelerator and the hum returns
4. Repeat 2 and 3 above to continue hearing and stopping hum.
A friend said it could be the fuel pump, but I said not so. The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank in the rear of the car while this steady hum is coming from under the hood.
Any suggestions? Please, don't overlook the obvious, and think simple. Thank You.
