Heater in 97 olds

I have a 97 Olds Cutlass. The heater for some reason does not seem like it is blowing anything unless I turn it up to 3. If it is on 1 or 2, it does nothing. Today on the ride to work it started making a wining noice, that got stronger the higher I turned it up. After about 15 minutes, the wining stopped.

Any idea what the heater problem is?

Likely a wasted blower motor resistor. Common GM problem.

Is that something that is easily fixed by a do-it-yourself'er or should I have some one do it?

Any idea on the cost?

Resistor should be under 50 bucks. Any Delco dealer or GM parts counter will have it.

Usually, it's located outside on the heater/HVAC box and held in with a couple of screws.

Have the parts person at the dealer print out the picture from the parts book when they look up the part for you and you can decide for yourself if it's something you want to do.
