Ignition Timing

The ignition timing on this 95 Nissan Quest is 15 degrees BTDC.

Please correct me if I am wrong here.

If I set the crankshaft pulley so that it is on the 15 degree mark, then the rotor on the distributor should be pointing directly at the # 1 position on the distributor cap ....is this correct ????

or

If I set the crankshaft pulley so that it is on the 0 degree mark (TDC), then the rotor on the distributor should be pointing at about 15 degrees past the # 1 position on the distributor cap ....is this correct ????

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

What does your service manual or Alldata.com subscription have to say?

Always follow the mfgr's recommended procedure. I assume you are changing a timing belt? Otherwise, there is no need to alter the factory timing.

Ignition Timing

I dropped the motor & trans in this 95 Nissan Quest due to broken exhaust manifold bolts & studs. I also realized I had 2 broken cylinder head bolts on the left side when I removed the valve covers. Couldnt believe it... I was lucky the head of the cylinder head bolts didnt go into the camshaft area or I would have had more serious problems to contend with.

I had a valve grind done & resurface done on both heads. I also hot tank the intake manifold & air collector to remove all carbon buildup in them. The engine is now free of carbon buildup.

Timing belt was replaced & properly installed.

A 133 teeth belt. 40 teeth between timing marks on right side camsprocket & left side camsprocket. 43 teeth between timing marks on left side camsprocket & crankshaft gear. The belt is set correctly per the Nissan service manual I have.

Distributor was removed but not marked when I removed the heads....Oopps !!!! No problem. Will correct with timing light...... At the most I will only be a tooth off..... I will know when the car starts the first time.

Ignition timing is to be set at 15 degrees BTDC per the Nissan Service manual.

My question was one of theory about timing. Thats all....

Do you agree with my way of thinking ??????
