91 Tercel CV Axle question

Trying to replace a CV axle on a friend's 91 Toyota Tercel. Using a rebuilt from a local auto shop. The manual says to step on the brake with loosening or tightening the CV bolt. I have a helper to do that and as soon as button everything up and I move the car out of the driveway or some distance around the block, I hear a pop and then the axle freewheels. The outboard joint is no longer connected to the axle. What am I doing wrong? Is it me or the rebuilt axle?

Get another axle. That one sounds wasted.

Thanks...the next one will be the 6th! I was wondering if there is anything special about these Toyota ones...I've replaced them before on my own cars and other than replacing the rebuilt ones every three years, they at least last...past my block!
