Degreasing engines...

Degreasing engines...
Old cars was pretty straightforward... cover intake and distributor cap, hose generously w/ degreaser, rinse, repeat.
Need to degrease my 92 lumina (3.1). Valve covers and the o-ring on the oil pump drive are shot and will be replaced.
Looking for opinions on the best way to progress w/ degreasing the thing without causing anything to be FUBAR.
I know not to degrease it hot... and I assume getting degreaser near obvious electrical components is a no-no. But the coil packs on this thing are on the lower front portion of the engine. I will be hard pressed to keep them dry as a portion of the engine in that area is in need of degreasing.
Is it ok to get the coil packs wet?
I am pretty sure the car should be OFF while I do this, is that correct?
Any input will be greatly appreciated!
Thx,
Gomer

Cover everything you are worried about with a few trash bags, tape them up tight. Cover any wires you are worried about in a hose that you cut down the middle then tape it close, then tape the ends.

every once in a blue moon, I decide to degrease the 5.0 mustang.
I get cans of the engine degreaser and spray it every where. Then I get the hose and spray EVERYTHING down. I try to not get the wiring too wet, but I am not paranoid about it.
Only once the car wouldn't start afterword, and I had to wait a while till it dried off

I use a product that works great for engine degreasing and cleaning the throttle bores and mas air sensors as well. The mechanics and especially the boat shops here in Orlando are going nuts over it. The boat mechanics love it for de-carboning and so do the auto shops. It is called Power Foam and is made by AMSOIL
