fuel gauge

i have a 79 camero berlinette,350 engine turbo hydramatic.
what is the oem voltage values for proper functioning of the the fuel gauge and fuel tank sending unit combination?
i was told you cannot test a fuel gauge to see if it works.
thank you.

sure u can test the gauge with key on and wires un hooked from tank ground the wire for the sending unit and watch the gauge
if it changes from grounding it and unhooked gauge is good if it doesnt check fuses if all fuses r good id suspect the gauge. note some gauges will either show full or empty when grounded

Check the ground wire above the tank, betcha it's pinched, rusted or of poor connection. The gauge is very rarely the problem.

More than likely if the ground checks out, it's the float in the tank.
