Car wont start

I have a 91 Honda Civic 4 door sedan 1.5 liter engine, 5 speed manual transmission. When I turn the key in the ignition, it makes a fast whirring sound. My first thought was the starter but I wanted to get other opinions.

car was tuned up 10,000 miles ago
timing belt was replaced 40,000 miles ago
I could not get the distributor cap off because the bolts are beginning to strip and I was afraid to make them worse.

Thank-you
Sal

Sounds like it could be a timing belt. I know that it was replaced only 40,000 miles ago, but maybe it's time for another one. If you can get the distributor cap off, then you will be able to tell if the rotor doesn't spin when you turn the key. Try using vice grips to take the bolts off and then replace them when you put it back.

I agree. Sounds like your timing belt is wasted. If you didn't change the water pump when you did the timing belt, good chance the pump leaked coolant onto the belt and wasted it .

Hi Joe_F and Raymo8

Thanks for your quick replies.

I got the distributor cap off and the rotor is turning when I try to start the car. I was glad to see that. Any other ideas?
