Suzuki Samuri 1987 starter problems

I replaced my starter because I found I could jump contacts to make it start, at least I think it is the starter. I replaced it with a new one, and the same thing happens, however, the solenoid does not kick the starter in to start the vehicle. And the positive terminal wire as well as the neg get hot and smoke when trying to start it. What am I doing wrong? Please help. I also made sure that the tyerminals were properly attactched to the starter and reversed.

Thank you

Have you checked the wiring to the starter? Is it the right starter? Where was it purchased from?
