Replacing Heater Core

I am replacing the heater core in my 67 Camaro and after I removed the old core I noticed it was set in a putty compound. I had to through away the old putty because it was contaminated with antifreeze. Can anyone tell me what kind of putty it was and where I can get it? It was something like plumbers putty but I would think it would need to be heat resistent.

3M strip caulk will work just dandy in this application.
