1996 Olds Cutlass Supreme Serpentine Belt Replacement

Hi all,

I'm going to return the favor to a friend and replace the serpentine belt on his 96 Cutlass (115k mi, 3.1 V6, A/C, P/S, auto). He helped me with my 99 Escort ZX2 belt swapout (see elsewhere on this forum). Any tips or suggestions? I've looked a little bit at the cybrrpartspro website, but wondered if anyone else had any suggestions.

Thanks again.

Pretty straightforward if you follow the Autolibrary website. Make sure you have a serpentine belt tool as it is pretty easy with that over a rachet or breaker bar.

thanks, joe, but when I went to the cybrrparts site, I saw no 3.1 L engine diagram to see which pulley is the actual tensioner. Am I looking in the wrong place? I saw the diagrams for several other engines, just not the 3.1. I do know from looking in his engine bay he has a LOT more room to work with than my Escort did.

Look up any other GM vehicle with a 3.1 of similar or same vintage, they are likely all the same. The belt routing diagram is on a sticker under the hood in case you forget how it goes.

If memory serves correct, as you are leaning over the passanger fender, the alternator is on top of the engine, towards the windsheild, the tensioner should be directly below, slightly towards the front of the car/engine. I believe it takes a 3/8 rachet/breaker bar to fit the square hole in the end of the tensioner arm..
