chevy engine year
I have a 76 firebird and believe it has a chevy 400 in it..Is there a number i can pull off the engine that will let me know for sure the year of
the motor that was put in it. I will be looking for a manual and parts on it. it has a point ignition system on it and having trouble getting fire..

Look at the oil filter. If it's on the left side of the engine, it's a Chevy engine. Pontiac engines have it on the right side on an angle.
On Chevy V8's, the numbers are on the alternator pad (behind the alternator on the block). Give me what you find (a three digit suffix code like CBA, a date code and a partial vin # stamp).
If it's a Pontiac V8, the numbers are behind the timing cover on the engine. It starts with 2 for Pontiac division.
In short, post all numbers you find and the details of it and I'll tell you what it is.

Thanks Joe
Well i found the filter to be on the left hand side ( passenger). The numbers i come up with are on the front of the block on the left hand side.
co33896 (pretty sure the 8 is not a 3)
yx (under it)
the heads have 6x in the middle and GM2 on the end.
If i need more info please just let me know.
Also is one of the engines better than the other
as far as 400's go..??? (if it is a 400)
thanks
Don

Possible 400 from a 1971 to 1972 B Series (Bonneville, Catalina, etc).
You're missing the vin # stamp. It starts with 2 for Pontiac.
6X heads are definitely Pontiac. I have them on my 1979 Trans Am 400 4 speed (they are original).
You can go to any site that has Pontiac #s and it will help. Type "Pontiac V8 engine numbers" in www.google.com
