98 Escort just over 100,000 miles

I have a 98 Ford Escort that recently went over 100,000 miles. Soon after, the check engine light came on. I've checked all fluid levels, belts, the car runs fine with no signs of a problem. On Fords, does the check engine light come on after 100,000 miles sort of as a reminder to get the car serviced. Just seeing if anyone can help before I take it in and pay $100 to hook it up to a computer. Thnx

98 Escort

100,000 miles on a five year old car!?! Wow, you're not messing around. Anyhow, here's my .02 worth...And, keep in mind I'm no car expert: Have you had the car serviced lately?. With 100,000 miles I think it would be best to take it in anyhow and have it checked out. There are various things that can cause that light to come on (emissions, etc.) In fact, on the new Fords if you do not have your gas cap screwed on right than the check engine light will come on! If the car is running fine than you may just be in need of a tune-up. However, if you ignore the check engine light than you could cause futher damage to the car in the long run.

Auto Zone should have what you need to pull codes on your Escort and shouldn't cost a dime. Give it a shot.
