replacing the front brakes (hopefully pads only) on a front-wheel drive 1998 honda civic.
How hard is this....do I get involved with the front wheel drive part?

and you should find the procedure. That new a car should be no reason to do anything other than replace the pads, UNLESS they have worn to the point of damageing the rotors. Don't recall how Hondas are mounted, but normally couple of bolts and the calpier assembly comes free of its mounting. Compress pistons back into caliper using large c-clamp or special tool (check local parts store for loaner tools), install new pads, reinstall caliper. Do one side at a time, so that you can use the one that is not apart for reference if you forget how something goes back together.
And SAFETY FIRST; make sure vehicle is properly supported on solid ground with jack stands.
