99 Escort speedometer/odometer problem

1999 Ford Escort 4-door
2.0 ltr engine, 4 cyl
approx 43K miles

For the second time, this morning my speedometer stuck at 0, regardless of my speed (part on surface streets, part on highway), for most of my 30 minute drive. I also noticed that the mileage odometer/trip odometer didn't move when the speedometer needle was stuck at 0. It finally got working again right before I got to work. The odometers began working again as well.

The first time this happened (maybe a month ago?), the speedometer needle was stuck at 0 for only about 10-15 minutes before it got unstuck and registered the correct speed. I did not notice the odometer problem the first time the speedometer stuck.

I have not done anything to have this fixed. Could it be the cable? It is not a digital speedometer/odometer. Is this something that could be easily fixed (I don't have the cash to go to a mechanic, but I do have a handy friend). Thanks.

Have your handy friend check the speed sensor.

When I first started driving i bought a used ford F150 that had a switch under the seat that would cause the exact situation of course the purpose of the switch was to keep the odometer down. and it was wired to a speed sensor. Take odometer fraud to a whole new level when you don't have to roll back the odometer. I never used it but he probably used it alot, I never really new the mileage on that thing.
