Converting to automatic transmission

I'm curious about the feasibility of converting a car from a manual trans to an automatic transaxle. I have a '95 Mercury Tracer and an '01 Ford Escort, either of which could be candidates. As you know the two cars are very similar in design but I would probably opt to convert the '95 Tracer since the newer car still has significant resale value and finding a junkyard donor for the Tracer should be easier. My motivation is the fact that my wife's upcoming hip surgery will exclude her from driving a stick, possibly permanently.

I can envision that the trans, torque convertor, linkage, pedal assembly, and I suppose radiator from a donor car will need to be swapped out. What about the engine computer? Would the cost and possible complications make buying a used car with an automatic a better alternative? If it is doable, could a halfway decent amateur mechanic and parts changer like myself handle it? Thanks for your time. I value your opinions and experience.

I got smart and searched your archives for similar questions. Im convinced its a bad idea. I guess I'll go used car shopping.

Wise move. Frankly, it would never be the same as if it were factory. The possibility of parts being different is too great to gamble.
