Automotive Turn Signals Problems

Re: 1998 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS.

When I change from left lane to right lane I push the level up.
When I do this the flasher start flickering very fast but does not show any lights in the instrument panel neither outside the car (front or back).

Also, the "Emergency Lights" sometimes work and sometimes do not work.

When I make a right turn or a left turn the Turn SIgnals work okay.

I have checked visually the outside bilbs and they seem okay.

Please give me your advice.

Thank you.

Change all the bulbs, don't assume they are OK.

Barring that, sounds like a bad turn signal/multifunction switch in the column. Shouldn't be hard to change.

I'm not sure I understand...... the signal works when you turn, but not when you switch lanes? This makes no sense, because the difference is only how much you turn the wheel, and if you are signaling at the correct time, you havent even turned the wheel yet........anyway, change the bulbs, might need to replace the turn signal cam......... could be a wiring problem. Please clarify the problem for us.

Agree with Joe,

most likely the turn signal/multifunction switch.
Common problem with Ford products.

I have fixed them by taking the switch apart and cleaning the contacts inside. The grease starts to "cake-up" and insulate the terminals. Much easier to just replace if your not comfortable taking things apart.
