94 Saturn Clutch

94 Saturn Clutch
My wife's 94 Saturn SL1, M/T, Air, 75,000 miles has been having trouble shifting into 1st & 2nd gear, the rest of the gears are fine.
The problem seems to become more prominent after driving for 10 to 20 minutes, the stickshift doesn't seem to fit into the gear properly.
The dealership says the clutch needs to be replaced at a cost of $1000.00 Cdn for 7hrs labour & parts but that seems kind of drastic for a car with relatively low mileage. The clutch does not seem to be affected in any other way such as slipping or revving high so I'm wondering if it might be linkage or hydraulic related instead.
I don't trust the dealership even though my wife insists the service rep is sooo nice and before I take it to an independent I was looking for some suggestions.
I've checked alldata and autolibrary but there is no info and none of the other postings deal with this problem.
Thanks in advance
Mike
