Car Repair (1998 Grand Am)

My husband is trying to replace the alternator belt on a 1998 Grand Am with 2.4 engine. He cannot find the tension adjustment or any way to adjust the tension in order to mount the belt. Any ideas?

The tension is controlled automatically by the tensioner. No adjustment. If the unit is faulty, it must be replaced.

Have a look at the diagram under the hood which shows the belt routing. There, they will typically show the tensioner pulley. Usually, you put a 15mm wrench on the center bolt there, or they sell tools at the parts store for this purpose. Autozone can rent you one.
