transmission trouble

The rear seal on my 5 speed transmission is leaking on my 1994 Ford Escort, this is where the shifting rod moves in and out of the tranny. I purchased the part which is only $5, but i was told that the part has to be changed from the inside of the tranny (Ford and Mazda technology???). The strange part is the seal is slightly tapered and looks like to install it that it is press fit in. I have removed all the shifting rods from underneath the car and have accesss to the seal (it sticks out from the tranny, very visible and accessable). Does anyone know if i can change it from the outside, or is it true that the tranny has to be removed and disassembled in order to change this $5 part?.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

If you can see it, it probably can be done from the outside.

I have done many rear seals by gently tapping into them and pulling them out. Then, I tap them flush with a hammer and a flat piece of metal/block, being careful to get them square. Lisle and other tool companies make a seal remover.

This is where you should have a service manual, because it will go into great detail about things like this---check autolibrary.org below if you don't have one.

Mazda/Ford technology: Yup, always lackluster/bottom barrel with regard to many things, including serviceability .
