Question overdrive

I have a car that has an overdrive gear. I have driven this car in overdrive for about two years. I was told by a friend that overdrive was for driving up hills and I should be driving in the drive position. I live in southern Louisiana. There are no hills. Is he right and if so, do you think I hurt the transmission? It appears to shift without any problems. I was going to check with a shop but figured everyone here can answer any question I might have.

Keep using O/D your friend is incorrect,if you were towing or going up and down alot of hills you could select a lower drive but I wouldn't lose sleep over it.
